Traveling Exhibit at ʻImiloa March 12-June 9

Explore the Mahina (Moon), connect with Hawaiian practices, and learn about STEM at ʻImiloa.

Kaulana Mahina (the Hawaiian lunar calendar) is an interactive traveling exhibit provided by INPEACE.

This exhibit showcases the Mahina (Moon), its relationship to environmental practices such as fishing and planting, and scientific observation through Hawaiian culture. From March 12-June 9, enjoy nine informational and interactive stations to:

  • Discover Lonomuku’s story and how her name holds meaning to explain that some mahina skips the Mauli phase.

  • Experience the changes of the Moon phases from inside a darkened enlosure.

  • Test your knowledge of the sequence and names of each of the 30 Kaulana Mahina by playing a puzzle activity.

  • Travel through the lunar phases from the perspective of being the Moon.

  • Operate a 3D model of the Moon in orbit around the Earth and both in orbit around the Sun.

  • Watch a NASA visualization of the changing Moon phases.

  • Learn how the magnetic pull of the Earth, Moon and Sun influence the tide with our magnet activity.

  • Travel through the 30 Moon phases while playing an interactive game as fisherman or farmer.

  • Contribute to a visitor talkback and share how the Kaulana Mahina affects your life.

The Kaulana Mahina exhibit is included with admission.
