Haluluikeihiokamalama: Ki‘i of Ka‘ao: Explore the Imagery
Delve into the rich imagery of the oli "Haumeakalani" under the new moon in our second workshop, "Ki‘i of Ka‘ao: Explore the Imagery," led by Kekuhi Keali'ikanaka'oleohaililani. In this session, participants will deconstruct the mele "Haumeakalani" and use its elements as a foundation to craft their own personal narratives. You'll be guided through a creative process that encourages you to explore and express your story using various mediums, engaging with imagery and construction to bring your narrative to life.
This immersive workshop series includes access to a culminating special event on March 14, 2025, where all participants from the three different Haluluikeihiokamalama workshops will come together to share and celebrate their journey.

Māhilu Wreath Workshop

Wine, Dine and Dive into Fungi at ʻImiloa!
The first of our new twilight event series features the planetarium film, Fungi: Web of Life, wine tasting, pupu, and a presentation on Hawaiʻi fungi by “Mushroom Man,” Dr. Don Hemmes. Get immersed in the magical kingdom of fungi during a spore-tacular and engaging evening, with wine and food provided by Lehua Restaurant.
About Dr. Hemmes
Dr. Hemmes taught cell and molecular biology at UH-Hilo for over 40 years and retired in 2007. After a career in biology studying the spore formation and germination in fungi by transmission electron microscopy, he received a National Science Foundation grant to study mushrooms of Hawai’i. For 25 years Dr. Hemmes and his colleagues have been describing Hawaiian fleshy fungi found from mountain tops to sea shores on the major Hawaiian Islands.
About the film

Embark on a transformative journey with Kekuhi Kealiʻikanakaʻoleohaililani in our Haluluikeihiokamalama series. Our first workshop in this series, "Haumeakalani," coincides with August's Sturgeon Moon, a unique seasonal blue supermoon, and delves into the profound energy that shapes island consciousness.
Workshop Highlights:
Mele and Oli: Learn to oli, chant and deconstruct the mele. Participants will also engage in pahu, drum techniques and etiquette.
Island Consciousness: Explore how energy influences the folding and unfolding of island consciousness.
Personal Narratives: Develop skills to create your personal kaʻao (narratives) through the mele.
