Our Name

ʻImiloa means "to seek far" and is the Hawaiian word FOR both "explore" and "explorer."

Through our Planetarium and 12,000-square-foot Exhibit Hall, we link early Polynesian navigation history and knowledge of the night skies, and today’s renaissance of Hawaiian culture and wayfinding, with the parallel growth of astronomy and scientific developments on Hawaiʻi Island.

Join us in exploring our place in the genealogy of the Universe as we continually seek, learn, and adapt to an ever-evolving environment that inspires discovery and innovation.

Explore Our Native Gardens

ʻImiloa’s award-winning landscape provides visitors with a glimpse into Hawaiʻi's pristine, native ecosystem. Our native landscape is a living exhibit of endemic, indigenous, and Polynesian-introduced plants, or what are often called "canoe plants."

Walk along our Canoe Plants pathway to see those plants which early Polynesians brought to the islands.
