One Sky Project

Watch in ʻImiloa’s Planetarium

The One Sky Project is an ʻImiloa-led initiative that seeks to build cross-cultural connections and increase the understanding of indigenous perspectives by sharing stories of the night sky from people across the globe.

The project produced six full-dome short films — Wayfinding (Hawaiʻi), Thunderbird (Navajo), Jai Singh’s Dream (India), Celestial Canoe (Innu), The Samurai and the Stars (Japan), and The Forge of Artemis (Greece) — featuring stories that resonate across time and show how our One Sky connects us all. These films are shown Tuesday-Sunday inside ʻImiloa’s Planetarium.

The project is supported by the California Academy of Sciences, the Franklin Institute, and the National Science Foundation’s NOIRLab. It was made possible through funding by the Thirty Meter Telescope International Observatory, which provided support and, equally importantly, autonomy to explore and to arrive at the final shorts produced. Additionally, the collaborative included educators, cultural experts, indigenous artists, astronomers and planetarium professionals from Canada, China, India, Japan, and the United States.
