E ʻAi Kekahi, E Kāpī Kekahi

*activities included as a part of regular admissions

Sunday, April 26 | 10a - 2p

Come to ʻImiloa for a day with special enhancement activities, centered around our kai and lawaiʻa practices. This community-centered event is inspired by the Hawaiian ʻōlelo noʻeau:
“E ʻAi Kekahi, E Kāpī Kekahi”, which reminds us of balance, restraint, and our kuleana through fishing traditions.

Grounded in the ʻōlelo noʻeau that encourages mindful harvest—“eat some, salt some”—this event invites our guests to explore Hawaiian perspectives on conservation, sustainability, and the passing down of ʻike across generations.

We also celebrate and mahalo the Explorers of Lawaiʻa exhibit for sharing their space with our community, as this will be the final day to experience the exhibit.

TCBES Speaker Series

Over the past few centuries, novel human activity has reversed a 50-million-year-long global cooling trend and driven biodiversity losses worldwide. These climate and ecosystem changes began decades to centuries before the advent of long-term monitoring programs – meaning that most of our contemporary records come from systems that have already undergone significant alteration. To robustly evaluate the rate and magnitude of past ecological change, identify likely tipping points, and determine whether modern ecosystems have already moved towards novel ecological states, we need exceptional fossil records that have the temporal resolution to both capture fine-scale biological dynamics and reach many thousands of years into the past. In this seminar, I will showcase recent findings from an “invisible timescale” system, the Southern California Borderland Basins, where sediment cores with annual layers preserve a high-resolution fossil record can be directly tied to long-term modern observations to retroactively extend ecosystem monitoring prior to the onset of anthropogenic climate change. This dataset combines seafloor community composition and individual functional traits with paleoclimatic data, and spans a period of 35,000 years that includes the Last Glacial Maximum and the abrupt warming events of the last deglaciation. By placing the ecological impacts of contemporary anthropogenic change in the context of ecosystem changes since the last Ice Age, I find that the “Anthropocene” is truly unique compared to the geologic past. Beginning in the 19th century, seafloor ecosystems undergo a regime shift towards novel community states, with community composition being distinct from any recorded in the past 35,000 years. At the same time, benthic communities experience  reproductive life history changes, biomass declines, and population losses that accelerate in the mid-20th century. This ecological state shift may represent a “tipping point” triggered by land-use changes initiated during the Spanish and American colonization of California. Lessons from this “invisible timescale” system can be applied more broadly to better understand how to manage ecosystems for long-term resilience in the Anthropocene.

Alakaʻi 1777

ONE DAY PLANETARIUM EXHIBIT MARCH 17 3:30 P.M.

Included with General Admission Ticket

*UH and HCC Students get free admission with their free membership

Alakaʻi 1777 is an immersive audiovisual installation that reconstructs the lost song culture of the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō (kuh-wai-ee oh-oh), an extinct Hawaiian bird once native to the Alakaʻi swamp. The work is inspired by a simple premise—when populations collapse, so do their learned traditions and vocal cultures that have built up over generations. In Alakaʻi 1777, interacting artificial agents sing from a mathematical model of the avian vocal organ (the syrinx), trained on the few surviving recordings of the species. These voices are nestled within site-specific ecological data from the ʻōʻō’s last known habitat: LiDAR scans of the forest, spatial audio recordings of the dawn chorus, and urbanization histories rendered as sound and image. To give listeners a deeper sense of this lost world, the entire soundscape is slowed down, allowing them to experience the songs as the original inhabitants of Alakaʻi may have perceived them. Within this expanded space, artificial agents act as spectral ancestors, engaging in a dynamic, multi-layered dialogue with real Kauaʻi ʻōʻō recordings, offering a glimpse into a richer, more intricate soundscape that vanished long before the last bird fell silent.

Honuaiākea: Developing Kapu and Kānāwai Through Ancestral Ecological Knowledge

Luka Kanakaʻole

Program Manager and Kiaʻi for the Edith Kanakaʻole Foundation

Join us for this conversation with Luka Kanakaʻole as he demonstrates that the development of kapu (elements to hold sacred) and kānāwai (protocols that uphold them) through the analytical process of Honuaiākea — a rigorous methodology for shaping contemporary policy, governance, and environmental stewardship. Emerging from the Papakū Makawalu framework, Honuaiākea centers ʻike Hawaiʻi as foundational scientific knowledge. Rather than positioning culture as an addition to Western science, Kanakaʻole advances an approach in which conventional biological data and ancestral ecological knowledge inform one another as equals. With a background in biology, he reflects on moving beyond a data-dominant “sprinkle of culture” model toward a comprehensive, place-based knowing grounded in location-specific Ancestral Ecological Knowledge. Central to this work is protocol: opening with oli sets intention, removes ego from decision-making, and situates governance within relationship—to place, to ancestors, and to future generations.

A Year of Lava Fountains in the Forecast

A Year of Lava Fountains in the Forecast

Kīlauea volcano has historically erupted more than 35 episodes in the summit caldera since December 23, 2024. Lava fountains from two eruptive vents have built an impressive cone on the crater rim and incrementally filled in Halemaʻumaʻu crater with stacks of lava flows. Volcanic gas emissions and particles of lava are carried in downwind directions. Have there been similar eruptions in the history of Kīlauea? What are the hazards associated with this activity? How could this eruption potentially end? Join USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory deputy Scientist-in-Charge David Phillips as he answers these questions and more.

Planetarium Guest Speaker: Hitoshi Murayama

Where do we come from? Where are we going? These questions are common to the entire humankind, and especially deeply rooted in Polynesian and East Asian cultures. We built a new $100M instrument to study these questions mounted on the Subaru telescope atop Maunakea. It will explore how stars and galaxies are born in the gravitational womb of dark matter. It will study how the universe has been expanding and where it is going, or whether it will end. These grand questions can be studied only thanks to the pristine environment and public support on Hawaiʻi Island. The prime focus spectrograph will have 2400 eyes on the universe to conduct these studies which would have taken 1000 years otherwise.

About Dr. Murayama

Hitoshi Murayama is a well-known theoretical particle physicist who works broadly, even on astrophysics, cosmology, and condensed matter physics. He has been a professor in the University of California, Berkeley, since 2000, and is also the founding director of the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) at the University of Tokyo, serving from 2007 to 2018. Born in Japan, lived in Germany for four years and in the US for 21 years, served on advisory committees around the world, he is a multicultural global denizen. In October 2014, he was invited to give a speech at the United Nations headquarters in New York about how science unites people and brings peace. He received the Yukawa Commemoration Prize in Theoretical Physics and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

  • Keiki must be between 1-4 years old and have an accompanying adult to participate.

  • Participation is limited to eligible keiki and their caregiver(s).

  • Caregivers may supervise no more than two keiki. This  mandatory ratio of 2 keiki to 1 adult is employed to ensure that each child receives the supervision, and support they need to thrive in the program.

  • Accompanying adults are expected to participate and guide their child(ren) through the program’s hosted activities.

  • Adult-to-child ratio of 1:1 for a more enriching experience. By ensuring each child has dedicated attention, caregivers can actively engage with their keiki, fostering exploration, learning, and bonding moments that are both memorable and educational. This balanced ratio not only enhances the quality of interaction but also ensures the safety and enjoyment of all.
