“The Voyage”


ʻImiloa is proud to present our Hālau Lamakū Summer Enrichment Program — "The Voyage," an immersive program that spans five one-week sessions, each specifically designed to provide a diverse and enriching experience for your keiki. Join us for an unforgettable summer of learning, growth, and cultural exploration at ʻImiloa's Hālau Lamakū Summer Enrichment Program!

Camp Eligibility

  • Keiki must have been enrolled in grades K-5 in the school year 2023-2024. 

  • Keiki must be able to participate safely and adhere to rules/instruction in a teacher-student ratio of 1:16. ‘Imiloa is not able to provide one-on-one support or supervision. Should your child require 1:1 supervision, please contact Education Manager Anya Tagawa at (808) 932-7836.

Important Dates

Member Registration: 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 1

Non-Member Registration: 9 a.m. Thursday, May 2.

Participant Information Form Deadline: 4 p.m. Friday, May 17


Session 1:

Building the Wa‘a — June 3-7 

In this session, keiki will learn about the materials and hand-crafted tools used to build a wa‘a (canoe), become familiar with the process of selecting a log to make the hull of the wa‘a, the parts of the wa‘a and their respective purposes, and make cordage from plant fibers that is used for lashing. Join us for an immersive journey of discovery and learning as we partake in “Building the Wa‘a.”

Session 2:

Keiki Cultivators — June 10-14 (No program on June 11 due to holiday)

In this session, keiki will embark on a journey to discover the various food plants essential to sustain Polynesian voyages. Keiki will participate in every stage of the farming process, from planting various food plants, tending to their māla, harvesting, and preparing traditional foods. Join us for an experience that will not only grow their green thumb, but also their connection to the land.

Session 3:

Life on the Wa‘a — June 17-21

This session invites young crew members to set “sail” with us on an extraordinary voyage. This experience offers a unique glimpse into the daily rhythm aboard a voyaging wa‘a, uncovering the intricacies of life at sea. Participants will actively engage in the preparation of nourishing meals using traditional foods and gain insights into the importance of sustenance during extended ocean journeys. They will explore sleeping arrangements and discover the camaraderie and shared spaces that characterize life on the open water. Additionally, explorers will investigate the pivotal roles each crew member plays in ensuring a successful voyage. Join us for an immersive voyage into the heart of wayfinding traditions.

Session 4:

Beyond the Reef — June 24-28

In this session, keiki will dive into exciting activities that connect keiki with the vibrant marine life, sea birds, and weather out on the open ocean. As participants stand on the wa‘a, they become witnesses to the interconnectedness of ecosystems, gaining a firsthand understanding of the intricate web of life that extends beyond the reef. Join us in embracing the wonders of the ocean, fostering a sense of stewardship and reverence for the rich biodiversity that thrives above and below the waves.

Session 5:

Navigators: We Know the Way — July 1-5 (No program on July 4 due to holiday)

In this session, keiki will be immersed in the celestial wonders of the night sky with: The Navigators: We Know The Way. Through exploration in our planetarium and fun activities, young learners will connect with the stars through exploration of Hawaiian star families and the intricate stories woven among them. This session will unfold the inner workings of the star compass, provide insights into the art of Polynesian navigation, and introduce observation techniques that teach us so much about the world around us. Join us for an adventure amongst the wind patterns, ocean currents, and stars and always know where you are.

Tuition (4-day program)

Member: $240

Non-member: $280

Programs will take place at ‘Imiloa. There are no off-site components.


HOW TO REGISTER

Step 1: READ OUR PARENT HANDBOOK (OUR HANDBOOK HAS BEEN UPDATED)

Our parent handbook is critical to understanding the program safety protocol, educational components, and program operations. Please read the handbook linked below prior to registering your child for the program. By registering your child, you are agreeing to the protocols, policies, and procedures outlined in the handbook. PARENT HANDBOOK  

STEP 2: PROVIDE PAYMENT ONLINE

Our payment/registration portal will open on this webpage on May 1 for members and May 2 for non-members.

STEP 3: PARTICIPANT INFORMATION FORM (MUST BE COMPLETED AFTER PAYMENT TO CONFIRM YOUR CHILD’S SPOT IN THE PROGRAM). 

We will need to gather more information to prepare and host your keiki at ʻImiloa. The  Participant Information Form will be emailed to the email address provided upon payment. If you are a member, the form will be sent to the email address associated with your membership account.

The deadline for submitting the Participant Information Form is 4 p.m. Friday, May 17. If your child's form is not received by this date and time, your child may lose their spot in the program.

  • New Members — click YES or NO, skip the Login button, and proceed to choose your desired Member Level.

To qualify for the membership price, the membership level must be Family or higher.


Refund Policy

Refunds will not be provided for withdrawals or program days missed. See Parent Handbook for more info.
