About this exhibit
Hawaiʻi’s Loko Iʻa (Hawaiian Fishpond) is an innovative part of our ahupuaʻa and the aquaculture system that has thrived for many generations. The Loko Iʻa Exhibit highlights STEM components of traditional Hawaiian fishpond systems and the brilliant engineering of the native Hawaiian people that aided to the Hawaiian communal society’s sustainable aquatic ecosystem.
This experience takes the visitor through 5 sections that aim to invigorate the scientist in them by activating their skill in kilo (observation to understand), noiʻi (investigation to know), and ʻimiloa (further explore). This Hawaiian culture and science pop-up exhibit provides an opportunity for all ages to learn how the loko iʻa (fishpond) affects the environment as this exhibit walks visitors through activities that will help connect native Hawaiian practices and STEM science.
