No ʻAneʻi Ko Kākou Ola
Our Identity Is From This Place – Connecting Back To The Homeland
As has become a tradition, the Hilo Field Study is being held as an immediate follow-up to the ICLDC held in Honolulu.
The theme of this year’s Hilo Field, “No ʻAneʻi Ko Kākou Ola” (interpreted in English above) has special significance to us in Hilo. It connects Hawaiian language revitalization efforts, to the larger U.S. national efforts in Native American language revitalization and indeed to Indigenous minority language revitalization around the world.
In conjunction with optional site visits, theme based panels will present on existing Hilo-based Hawaiian language consortium approaches of preparing students to live in communities where Indigenous languages - such as Hawaiian - are still minority languages in their own lands. Contemporary Hawaiian speaking communities in Hilo have much in common with diaspora communities in urban centers. Like many urban diaspora communities, families in Hawaiʻi often have mixed racial and linguistic identities amidst today's globalized world. Our Hilo consortium connects to diaspora Native Hawaiian communities by providing resources and expertise that provides a connection point back to the homeland and its traditional culture.

He ʻŌlelo Ola Conference Experience -
Please note: Participation in the Hilo Field Study requires inter-island air travel to Hilo, Hawaiʻi Island, located 210 miles from Honolulu.
The two day field study will host participants with:
An optional visit to our P-12 Hawaiian medium laboratory school – Nāwahīokalaniʻōpuʻu (The most developed and largest Hawaiian medium school in Hawaiʻi and the U.S.)
A visit to our state Hawaiian language college B.A.-Ph.D. Program (The only U.S. college administered, operated and taught primarily through a Native language.)
A visit to our ʻImiloa Hawaiian-English bilingual museum (a leading entity in integrating Indigenous world views and culture with international science).
Panels addressing issues relating to maintaining Hawaiian and other Indigenous languages from the homeland within a minority and multiethnic context, including in urban and diaspora contexts.
The Hilo Field Study especially welcomes school and other leaders from English dominant Indigenous communities in the United States dealing with issues similar to our own as they pursue language restoration, revitalization and maintenance.
